Every cruise ends the same way: a stampede off the gangway, a suitcase that won't zip, and — apparently — an astonishing number of shoes left behind in cabins by people who were absolutely certain they'd packed them. Carnival has decided those orphaned sandals deserve better than a landfill, and has become the first cruise line to partner with Sneaker Impact, a Miami-based outfit dedicated to keeping footwear out of the trash.

Here's how it works. Carnival gathers up the unclaimed shoes guests leave behind, plus any that guests or crew actively donate, and ships them to Sneaker Impact's Miami facility. From there, each pair is sorted onto its own little journey:

• Shoes still in decent shape are sold at a discount to small businesses in developing regions — affordable footwear where it's hard to come by, and a little income on the side.
• Shoes too far gone to wear get broken down into raw materials and reincarnated as athletic surfaces, yoga mats, and — full circle — brand-new shoes.

The numbers are genuinely not bad. Carnival estimates the program could give a second life to roughly 50,000 pairs a year. And this isn't a someday pledge: in July alone, with just five ships participating, more than 500 pairs were kept out of landfills. Scale that across the fleet and the math starts to look serious.
